Music Auditions

All music students will be required to perform an audition on their principal instrument or voice. Students must bring their own instruments, with the exception of drums. The duration of the audition will be 10 to 15 minutes.

1. Instrumental music candidates should perform their auditions based on the requirements for FBA or FOA All-State honors groups for the grade level they are entering. The All-State requirements apply to percussionists as well, but they should be additionally prepared to demonstrate mastery of rudiments and may choose to audition on a drum set, if applicable.
2. Vocalists should perform two contrasting pieces that best demonstrate technical proficiency and lyrical style. Vocalists are discouraged from performing auditions based on pop music. In additoon, all vocalist candidates will be asked to sight-read, match pitch patterns and answer basic theory questions.
3. Students may also perform solos they have prepared for FVA, FBA or FOA district evaluation festivals.
