Creative Writing Auditions

The Creative Writing course focuses on a study of various forms and genres of prose and poetry apart from, though not excluding, expositive and persuasive essays and interdisciplinary explorations in spoken word and playwriting.
Literary works will serve as models through analysis, application, and critique. Composition exercises will reflect an understanding of studied forms and an application of creative techniques.

All applicants to the Creative Writing strand at Arts & Minds must submit a portfolio that includes a minimum of 2 original pieces as follows:

Fiction or personal narrative

  • 2 short pieces (1500 word minimum)

OR

  • 3 flash fiction (1000 word maximum)

Poetry

  • 5 poems (at least half a page in length if typed, full page if handwritten)
  • If submitting both fiction and poetry, please submit at least two examples of each.
  • All work must be original with any quotes or references correctly cited.

During the audition, students must be able to demonstrate a basic familiarity with at least one style of writing and engage in a discussion of their work, their inspiration and their writing process.
